What is an American Bankers Association (ABA) Routing Number?

ABA Routing Numbers play a crucial role in financial transactions, enabling the transfer of money domestically across the U.S and internationally into the U.S. Different bank branches have different ABA Routing Numbers, so two branches of the same bank can be identified individually. Each bank branch has multiple ABA Routing Numbers to facilitate different transactions for varying purposes, such as physical cheques, electronic funds transfer, direct deposits and online banking.

Who uses ABA Routing Numbers?

The Automated Clearing House (ACH) Network use ABA Routing Numbers for direct deposits, bill payments and other automated money transfers. The Federal Reserve (FDR) use ABA Routing Numbers when processing Fedwire fund transfers. Businesses use ABA Numbers to keep bank master data tables up-to-date, and banks use them to ensure that they have accurate details of all other banks they send money to in the U.S.

How do you get an ABA Routing Number?

As Registrar of Routing Numbers for the ABA, LexisNexis® Risk Solutions is responsible for the assignment of routing numbers in accordance with eligibility criteria outlined in the ABA Routing Number Policy. To apply for a routing number, a financial institution must submit the following:

  • Completed Routing Number Application and Agreement
  • Preliminary, or final, charter approval from the chartering agency (State Banking Department, OCC, NCUA, etc.)
  • The application fee (please see application form for fees).

Upon receipt of the completed application form, charter approval and application fee, the Routing Number Application will take approximately two weeks to process. Please note that submitting incomplete information may delay processing.
