WASHINGTON, DC — The Harris County (Texas) Appraisal District’s Homestead Exemption Audit Project was recently named a winner in the first-ever StateScoop Local Smart Awards in the Local IT Innovation of the Year category. As a LexisNexis® Risk Solutions customer, the Harris County Appraisal District in Houston, Texas, used the LexisNexis Homestead Exemption Fraud Detection Solution to discover almost $22 million in additional tax revenue.
The appraisal district leveraged the advanced linking technology and identity analytics to compare existing homestead exemptions with public records data to help staff detect and research erroneous exemptions and return the recaptured values to the jurisdictions to collect taxes. In the first 18 months of implementing the technology, Harris County Appraisal District found $21,076,592 in undeserved homestead exemptions across Houston and the other taxing entities in the county.
