Adam Mariano joined LexisNexis® Risk Solutions in early April as the new President and General Manager of the healthcare business. Adam brings more than 20 years of clinical, technical, and legal experience across the provider, payer and pharmaceutical industries and was previously the head of global strategic operations at IQVIA in their Integrated Health Practice.

Beyond his leadership roles, Adam is a licensed nurse and an attorney under the California Bar and uses his law license to provide pro bono support in under-served communities of color with immigration, civil rights and health equity issues. Learn more about Adam’s unique background and why he’s excited to join the team.

Adam MorenoQ: What are some of the key milestones from your career that have been foundational to who you are as a healthcare leader?

A: I’ve been truly fortunate to have opportunities to work in healthcare in a variety of capacities that have given me a broad perspective of how all the various parts of our industry work, and sometimes don’t work, together.

I spent the first six years of my career as a nurse, including time at two large health systems in Philadelphia as well as in the prison system. That clinical experience was some of the most rewarding work I’ve done, and it really gave me a front row seat to view how care is delivered and ultimately cemented my desire to drive change in healthcare. Anyone who has spent time on a med-surg floor in an underserved community knows there must better ways of doing things, and I feel strongly that data and analytics play critical roles in that.

I also spent five years working for a consumer-packaged goods and healthcare customer service business which gave me a formative understanding of essentially every bit of technology you can think of. I had the opportunity to work on everything from CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software to massive data integration and migration projects, to speech recognition platform development. I worked with thousands of call center agents from diverse backgrounds living in different countries, which gave me a real grounding in what realistic product and software development looks like.

In addition to my clinical and early technical background, I spent 15 years consulting with dozens of payers, providers and life science companies, that informed my longitudinal view of integral patterns in the industry. I got a pragmatic view of all the critical payer, provider and life sciences operational roles, including the unique needs of each and how the clinical/operational architecture of these businesses has changed over time.

The reality is, to be successful, any good software or data vendor must be consultative with its customers. This requires specific focus on how products can meet customer needs by integrating into the landscape of the existing business and seamlessly compliment business workflows.

Q: What excites you most about taking on this new role as the leader of the Healthcare business of LexisNexis Risk Solutions?Adam Moreno

A: I think the thing that draws me to the tools and the people at LexisNexis Risk Solutions is that there are very few companies who have a truly holistic view of people, their lives and how that impacts their healthcare. This doesn’t just mean patients – it means people, their families and their dynamic needs – whole person healthcare insights. If you’re looking at a person from the seat of a payer, provider, life science company or pharmacy/retail health, you’re looking at four different versions or views of that person. LexisNexis Risk Solutions is one of the few companies in the world with the comprehensive data needed to bring those different viewpoints into focus. It has industry-leading assets that span identity management, provider data, social determinants data, medical claims data and many other complimentary offerings. The team culture and desire to improve outcomes for all is deeply inspiring. The organization is uniquely positioned to help improve quality of care, reduce the cost of care and help us all eliminate disparities in care.

Q: You have a special interest in combating health disparities and improving health equity. Tell us where that stems from?

A: It starts with watching some folks in my own family struggle to get access to, much less receive, quality and equitable healthcare. I also witnessed these obstacles with patients in my own experiences as a nurse in the clinical space, helping families with legal issues related to equitable access, as well as personal experience as a young parent with few resources. The struggle of underserved communities in healthcare cannot be overstated. There is a well-studied and documented systemic problem of biased care and a disparity of outcomes that is only being addressed in fits and starts through piecemeal efforts. We see a lot of conversation around these topics, particularly with social determinants, but I am always seeking ways to move beyond discussion to changing the realities in the industry. All these experiences have given me a reality-based understanding of the disparities in healthcare and have influenced everything I do in my career.

As a data and analytics organization, LexisNexis Risk Solutions has a tremendous opportunity to be deeply impactful in the battle for equitable healthcare for all. I’m excited to get started.
