GPS: UBI's Double-Edged Sword

Watch Paul Stacy of Wunelli, a LexisNexis Company, discuss the impact that the type of smartphone and firmware used can have on GPS data and UBI quality in telematics programs.
"GPS data is a tricky one. It's only ever an estimate of a position. We know how it works. We get triangulation from three or more satellites, and it gives us an estimated location. That information varies significantly in quality by phone type and also by the way the firmware runs on the phone.

Apple phones and Android phones all behave very differently, so having filters in place that allow us to normalize that is really important, and there's no other way of understanding how it varies unless you go into a lot of downloads and see what data you get in from different makes and models. There is no other way of doing it."
