A new survey commissioned by LexisNexis in 2014 aimed to better understand how the role of social media in law enforcement investigations is changing. Federal, state and local law enforcement professionals responded to the survey and said that social media is an increasingly valuable tool in both crime prevention and investigation. Comparing these results to the similar 2012 survey identifies how practices and processes are changing, confirms that social media use is becoming more prevalent, and raises questions regarding how exactly it is utilized to optimal effect in criminal investigations.
