LexisNexis Risk Solutions Expands Federal Law Enforcement Team with Retired US Secret Service Deputy Special Agent in Charge

Michael Hartenstein Joins the Government Group as Director of Federal Public Safety


WASHINGTON, DC — LexisNexis® Risk Solutions continues to deepen its expertise in federal criminal investigations with the addition of Michael Hartenstein, retired Deputy Special Agent in Charge of the Vice Presidential Protective Division for the U.S. Secret Service.

In his new role as director of Federal Public Safety Business Development, Hartenstein will develop and counsel the federal Public Safety and Law Enforcement team on strategic customer plans and will assist in the creation of solutions designed to meet the ever-evolving needs of agencies.

Hartenstein has 22 years of public service with the U.S. Secret Service in areas encompassing financial investigations, protective operations, major event security planning, protective intelligence, and training. He had the honor of being detailed to the Presidential Protective Division serving under George W. Bush, Barack H. Obama, and Donald J. Trump. Most recently, he was the Deputy Special Agent in Charge for the Vice Presidential Protection Division under Michael R. Pence. He was responsible for Division strategy, training, military and law enforcement liaison, human capital, emergency operations, logistics, budget and administration.

“I served in the U.S. Government for over two decades and value my federal, state and local law enforcement partnerships,” said Hartenstein. “I look forward to continuing to support law enforcement by providing analytical capabilities that help safeguard the public.”

While in the Criminal Investigative Division, Hartenstein coordinated bank fraud, credit card fraud, money laundering, identity theft, electronic crimes and anti-counterfeiting investigations worldwide. He was also detailed to the Joint Terrorism Task Force, where he assisted in counterterrorism investigations. Hartenstein’s career includes serving as a Supervisory Instructor at the U.S. Secret Service’s James J. Rowley Training Center, where he coordinated criminal investigative and protective training to the U.S. military, federal, state and local law enforcement partners.

Hartenstein holds a Bachelor of Science in the Administration of Justice from Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Protection and Safety Management from Saint Joseph’s University. He was selected to the U.S. Secret Service Senior Executive Service Candidate (SES) Development Program, receiving a Key Executive Leadership Certification at the American University, School of Public Affairs.
